Restoring Volume and Fullness to the Labia Majora

The labia majora are the outer folds of the vulva. Like other areas of the body, they can naturally change in appearance over time. Ageing, hormonal changes, menopause, pregnancy and childbirth, significant weight loss, or simply individual anatomy can result in loss of volume and a flatter, less full or more wrinkled appearance.

Labia majora augmentation is an intimate aesthetic procedure designed to restore volume and improve the contour and fullness of the outer labia.

At our clinic, labia majora augmentation can be performed using either:

The most appropriate treatment depends on your anatomy, the amount of volume required, your preferences and the result you would like to achieve.

Why Do Women Consider Labia Majora Augmentation?

There is a wide natural variation in the appearance of the vulva, and treatment is never medically necessary simply because the labia look different.

However, some women become concerned about loss of volume or changes in the appearance of the labia majora.

You may consider treatment if you have noticed:

During your consultation, your doctor will discuss your concerns and expectations and assess whether treatment is appropriate for you.

Labia Majora Augmentation with Dermal Filler

What Is Labia Majora Filler?

Labia majora filler is a minimally invasive treatment in which hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler is carefully injected into the labia majora to restore lost volume and improve their contour.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found within the body and is widely used in medical aesthetic treatments.

The aim is not to dramatically change the anatomy of the vulva, but to create a natural-looking improvement in volume, symmetry and smoothness.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Following a consultation and examination, the treatment area is cleaned and anaesthetic is applied.

The filler is then carefully introduced into the appropriate tissue plane within the labia majora. The amount used varies according to your anatomy, degree of volume loss and desired outcome.

Particular attention is paid to achieving a soft, natural contour and maintaining symmetry between the two sides.

The procedure is relatively quick and you can usually return home shortly afterwards.

What Anaesthetic Is Used?

Labia majora filler is generally performed under local anaesthetic.

A topical numbing cream may initially be applied to the area. Local anaesthetic can then be used to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Some hyaluronic acid fillers also contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic.

You therefore remain awake throughout the procedure and a general anaesthetic is not normally required.

What Is the Recovery Like?

Some swelling, tenderness or bruising can occur following treatment. This usually improves over the following days.

Although an increase in volume can be visible immediately, the final appearance should be assessed once any initial swelling has subsided.

How Long Do Labia Majora Fillers Last?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary and are gradually broken down by the body.

How long the result lasts varies between individuals and depends on factors including the product used, the amount injected, your metabolism and your anatomy.

Maintenance treatment can be considered when the effect begins to reduce.

Labia Majora Augmentation with Fat Transfer

What Is Labia Majora Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer, also known as autologous fat grafting or lipofilling, uses your own body fat to restore volume to the labia majora.

Instead of using a manufactured filler, a small amount of fat is removed from another area of your body, carefully prepared and then transferred into the labia majora.

Common donor areas may include the abdomen, flanks or thighs, depending on your individual anatomy.

Fat transfer may be particularly suitable for women who require greater volume restoration or who prefer to use their own tissue.

What Happens During Fat Transfer?

The procedure involves three main stages.

  1. Fat harvesting – a small amount of fat is removed from a suitable donor area using a gentle liposuction technique.
  2. Fat preparation – the harvested fat is carefully processed to prepare healthy fat cells for transfer.
  3. Fat injection – the prepared fat is strategically injected into the labia majora to restore volume and create a smooth, natural contour.

Because some of the transferred fat will naturally be reabsorbed by the body, the initial appearance may be slightly fuller than the eventual result.

The fat that successfully establishes a blood supply within the treated area may provide a longer-lasting volume increase.

What Anaesthetic Is Used for Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is a more involved procedure than filler augmentation because fat must first be harvested from another area of the body.

Depending on the extent of treatment, your individual circumstances and whether another procedure is being performed at the same time, fat transfer may be performed under:

Your doctor will discuss the most appropriate anaesthetic option with you during your consultation.

What Is Recovery Like After Fat Transfer?

You should expect some swelling, bruising and tenderness both around the labia majora and at the area from which the fat was harvested.

Swelling gradually settles, and the appearance continues to change as the transferred fat integrates into the surrounding tissues.

Some of the transferred fat will naturally be absorbed during the healing process. For this reason, the final result cannot be assessed immediately.

Your doctor will provide detailed aftercare instructions and advise when you can return to exercise, sexual intercourse and other activities.

Filler or Fat Transfer: Which Is Right for Me?

Both treatments aim to restore volume to the labia majora, but there are important differences.

Hyaluronic Acid Filler

Filler may be suitable if you:

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer may be suitable if you:

There is no single treatment that is best for everyone. Your doctor will examine the area and discuss the advantages and limitations of both approaches before recommending the most appropriate option.

Can Labia Majora Augmentation Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes. Depending on your individual concerns, labia majora augmentation may sometimes be performed alongside other intimate procedures, including:

Combination treatment is only recommended when clinically appropriate and will be discussed during your consultation.

Are There Any Risks?

As with any medical or aesthetic procedure, labia majora augmentation carries potential risks.

With filler treatment these can include:

Fat transfer carries additional considerations associated with both liposuction and fat grafting, including:

Your doctor will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and risks with you in detail before you decide whether to proceed.

FAQs

How long does labia majora filler last?

Hyaluronic acid filler is a temporary treatment and is gradually broken down by the body over time. The duration of the result varies between individuals and depends on factors such as the type and amount of filler used, your metabolism and your individual anatomy.

When the effect begins to reduce, maintenance treatment can be considered if desired.

How long does fat transfer to the labia majora last?

Fat transfer has the potential to provide a longer-lasting result than dermal filler. During the first few months, some of the transferred fat will naturally be reabsorbed by the body.

The fat cells that successfully establish themselves within the treated area may remain long term. However, the amount of fat retained varies between individuals, and occasionally further treatment may be required to achieve or maintain the desired volume.

Is labia majora augmentation painful?

We take steps to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

Labia majora filler is usually performed using local anaesthetic, and topical numbing cream may also be applied beforehand.

Fat transfer is a more involved procedure and may be performed under local anaesthetic, local anaesthetic with sedation, or general anaesthetic, depending on the extent of treatment and your individual circumstances.

Some tenderness, swelling or discomfort is normal during the first few days following either procedure.

When can I have sex after labia majora augmentation?

You will need to allow the treated area time to heal before resuming sexual intercourse.

The recommended period varies according to whether you have undergone filler or fat transfer and how your recovery is progressing. Your doctor will provide specific aftercare instructions and advise when it is appropriate for you to resume sexual activity.

When can I exercise again?

Light everyday activity can usually be resumed relatively quickly following filler treatment, although strenuous exercise and activities that place pressure or friction on the treated area should initially be avoided.

Recovery following fat transfer is generally longer because both the labia majora and the area from which the fat was harvested need time to heal.

Your doctor will provide personalised advice regarding exercise and other activities following your procedure.

Will the result look natural?

The aim of labia majora augmentation is to restore volume while maintaining the natural shape and proportions of the vulva.

Treatment is individually planned according to your anatomy and the degree of volume loss. The objective is generally a subtle, balanced improvement rather than an exaggerated appearance.

Can labia majora filler be dissolved?

If a suitable hyaluronic acid filler has been used, it can generally be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase if clinically necessary.

Your doctor can discuss this in more detail during your consultation.

Which is better: filler or fat transfer?

Neither option is automatically better.

Hyaluronic acid filler may be preferred by women looking for a minimally invasive treatment, relatively little downtime and a temporary, adjustable result.

Fat transfer may be more appropriate for women seeking greater volume restoration, who prefer to use their own tissue or who would like the potential for a longer-lasting result.

Your doctor will assess your anatomy, the amount of volume required and your expectations before recommending the most appropriate treatment.

How much filler will I need?

There is no standard amount suitable for every patient. The amount required depends on your existing anatomy, the degree of volume loss and the result you would like to achieve.

During your consultation, your doctor will assess the area and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

Will I see the result immediately?

With filler treatment, increased volume is usually visible immediately, although there may initially be some swelling. The final result is better assessed once this has settled.

With fat transfer, the initial volume will also change during recovery because swelling reduces and a proportion of the transferred fat is naturally absorbed. The longer-term result therefore takes more time to establish.

Can labia majora augmentation improve wrinkled or loose skin?

Restoring volume can help the labia majora appear fuller and may reduce the appearance of some wrinkling or deflation.

However, augmentation does not remove significant excess skin. If skin laxity is the main concern, your doctor can assess whether augmentation alone is likely to achieve the result you are looking for or whether another treatment would be more appropriate.

Can labia majora augmentation make the labia minora less visible?

In some women, loss of volume from the labia majora can make the inner labia appear more prominent.

Restoring volume to the outer labia may provide greater coverage and make the labia minora appear less prominent. However, the degree of improvement depends on your individual anatomy.

If the size or shape of the labia minora themselves is the primary concern, your doctor can discuss whether labiaplasty may be a more appropriate option.

Is labia majora augmentation suitable after menopause?

It may be. Falling oestrogen levels around and after menopause can contribute to changes in vulval tissues, including reduced volume and elasticity.

However, not every vulval symptom during menopause is caused by volume loss. Dryness, irritation, discomfort or painful intercourse may require assessment for genitourinary syndrome of menopause or another vulval condition rather than – or in addition to – an aesthetic treatment.

A medical assessment is therefore important before deciding on treatment.

Is the procedure confidential?

Yes. We understand that discussing intimate concerns can feel very personal. Your consultation, examination and treatment are carried out professionally, sensitively and confidentially.

How do I know which treatment is right for me?

The first step is a consultation.

Your doctor will listen to your concerns, assess your anatomy and discuss what you would like to achieve. You will then be given clear information about the available options, expected results, recovery, potential risks and alternatives.

There is no obligation to proceed with treatment following your consultation.
