Treatment of genital warts – this is performed using CO2 laser, which is an extremely effective treatment.
Genital warts is a common Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) passed on by vaginal or anal sex, sharing sex toys and rarely by oral sex. These manifest as painless lumps or growths around the vulva, vagina and anal regions, which can be very itchy. They can look like skin coloured irregular growths with a cauliflower like appearance. Sometimes they can be too small to notice.
Genital warts are caused by very infective viruses and 90% are caused by Human Papilloma Virus 6 and 11. These types of HPV are not associated with the risk of cancer.
If you think you have genital warts, you need to:
See a doctor for diagnosis and treatment
Notify your sexual partner(s)
Refrain from sexual intercourse until the warts are treated
Genital warts cause complications in patients who are immunocompromised such as patients with HIV or having chemotherapy. Pregnant women are also vulnerable to compilations from genital warts, which can stretch and bleed during vaginal birth and can infect the baby during vaginal birth.
Prevention is always better than cure and these are some of the steps one can take to minimise the risk of getting the virus:
Use condoms
Get the HPV vaccinations
Avoid multiple sexual partners
Treatment
Once you see the doctor, the doctor will take a full sexual history and will need to examine you.
Genital warts can be treated via one of three ways:
Cryotherapy: This involves freezing of the warts. Several sessions may be required to treat the warts fully.
Chemical treatment: A highly effective chemical can be applied to the wart to treat it. This can cause pain, irritation and bleeding.
Electrocautery and surgery: Deep rooted warts will need to be treated surgically. Here we dissect or cut the wart out using a scalpel of laser and then cauterise the base of the wart to treat any remaining virus and stop any bleeding.
